The article discusses the idea of using smart digital twins to support decision-making on the development of intelligent integrated energy systems (IES) and subsequent management by IES. The stages of automation, informatization and digitalization are considered as prerequisites for the intellectualization of energy systems. The basic concepts are introduced: digital twins (DTs), digital images and smart DTs, digital shadows. The ontological approach proposed by the authors to the construction of smart digital twins (SDT) using AI methods and scientific tools for research in the energy sector is considered. A hierarchical scheme of interactions between the DT of energy facilities and SDT of energy systems and the fuel and energy complex (FEC) is proposed. The implementation of scientific prototypes of the DTs of renewable energy sources (solar and wind power plants) using machine learning methods is described. Realization of an approach to building SDT of the fuel and energy complex based on the integration of mathematical and semantic (cognitive) models are considered. The prospects of SDT using for intelligent control of energy systems are analyzed. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
