Advanced co-generation systems and fuel co-production power generation systems are complex engineering systems. Their process flow diagrams include a large number of different components where a variety of physical and chemical processes take place. These components are interconnected by a significant number of process links that represent material and energy flows. Examples of such co-generation systems are steam turbine plants and combined-cycle gas turbine plants, including integrated solid fuel gasification combined cycle power plants. They can supply consumers with either electricity only or with electricity and heat in the form of steam and hot water. Furthermore, it is possible to additionally deliver the “cold” in the form of the heat transfer fluid cooled to a temperature lower than the ambient temperature. Examples of fuel co-production power generation systems are plants that combine the production of synthetic liquid fuels (methanol, dimethyl ether, etc.) and the generation of electric power. In this case, the composition of components of plants is even more diverse than in the case of co-generation systems and includes, for example, catalytic reactors for the synthesis of liquid fuel and systems for deep treatment of syngas to remove sulfur compounds and other chemical compounds that are poisonous to catalysts. The examples of co-generation systems and fuel co-production power generation systems demonstrate their complex structure, which in many cases is hierarchical. This is the basis for forming and solving the problems of mathematical modeling and optimization of advanced co-generation systems and fuel co-production power generation systems, the results of which are presented in this chapter. © 2023 Elsevier Inc.
